Vista from Camp Kanata! The last check-in of the summer went very smoothly and we are very thankful for that. After all the campers arrived the cabins set out for either their cabin photo or the swim assessment and camp tour. The cabins got through all of this easily and we were ready to meet in the dining for dinner. We ate spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread and ice cream at dinner before meeting in the amphitheater for our opening campfire. The campfire always starts with some silly skits from the counselors and ends with Shane talking about what is in store for us this week. We ended the night in our cabins for our nightly devotion before going to bed early to get ready for the week ahead.
Monday blues are never a things at Camp Kanata and today was no exception! We got off to a great start with Chapel presented by our Administration Staff. The Kanata Trait of the Day is caring so their skit was about how we will always have more fun when we care about others. After waking up Gertrude, the little old lady that lives across the water cul-du-sac who has no electricity, we went to the dining hall where we enjoyed French toast sticks, eggs, and sausage. After breakfast we all went back to our cabins to clean them up and make sure they look great for the day ahead. We all went to our activities after cleaning up. Kids can choose from a large variety of activities such as Canoeing, Alpine, H2O games, and Challenge Class, a record-breaking class. After third activity is Cabin Time which is an opportunity for cabins to bond and make stronger friendships. Everyone worked up an appetite so we went back to the dining hall for cold cut sandwiches, chips, and chocolate chip cookies! After learning that Cabin 25 on the girl’s side and 11 on the boy’s side won cabin cleanup, we went back to our cabins for rest period. We woke up from our naps and went to Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda, a free period where kids are free to try any activity that a counselor is at. CAMP STORE is yelled over the PA and all the kids rush to get their drink and snack from the Arts and Crafts building. After Camp Store is general swim so kids either swim in the lake or the pool with their units. After drying off we went back to the flagpole to sing some songs before dinner. We ate sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and spring rolls before enjoying chocolate pudding for dessert. Our Evening Program was Kanata-palooza. Half of camp went to the Hilton Field and watched a couple of our own counselors’ band play on the stage while playing field game with our friends. The other half of camp went to the Day Camp Field to play dodgeball. We ended the night with another devotion and thoughts of an amazing Tuesday.
We had an awesome day here at Camp Kanata! We started the morning with a chapel skit from Cabin 12 about honesty. For our most important meal of the day we had toast, grits, and eggs. After breakfast we had cabin clean up with our winners being Cabin 6 and Cabin 11. Next we were off to activities where campers continued to make new friends and build new skills. Some popular activities include Arts and Crafts, Climbing Wall, and Archery. After activities we had Cabin Time or Swim Time. One popular Cabin Time is the Butterfly Talent Show where the girls get to perform in front of the whole unit. Campers also got to swim at the lake and go on all of the attractions! We enjoyed chicken sandwiches at lunch with waffle fries and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Next was Rest Period where everyone relaxed to prepare for the rest of the day. Once we were well rested it was time for Shoulda Woulda Coulda, which is a free choice activity. After that we had Camp Store where everyone got a snack (for free). Our next activity was another Cabin Time or Swim Time. Dinner on Tuesday is special because it’s Unit Night, which means campers spend the whole night with their unit starting with roasting hot dogs and s’mores for dinner. Then, everyone has an evening program with the unit. Tonight all of the boy units combined together and so did all of the girl units. The girls had a giant paint party and the boys played games such as dodgeball. To finish the night, the boy and girl units had devotions to help bring everyone closer together and teach important YMCA character traits. Overall, it was a fun filled day and we know the week will continue to be amazing!
Another day has come and gone at camp and we had a great one. We started off the day with a skit about respect from Cabin 5 during chapel before going up to the dining hall for breakfast. We ate sausage egg and cheese biscuits for breakfast before going to our cabins for cabin cleanup. Activities were a blast today as campers start to master the different things Kanata has to offer. Campers have the option to try to rank in their activities by completing a list of tasks related to the activity they are ranking in. After the activity periods are over cabins meet up for Cabin Time. Some units go to the lake or pool during this time but others just spend time with their unit or cabin and grow closer to each other. By the end of Cabin Time everyone is hungry for lunch so we meet back in the dining hall for lunch. Today we had pizza with M&M cookies for dessert. We learned that Cabins 2 and 11 cleaned up the best this morning and then went back to the cabins for rest period. After recharging we went back out for Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda. We got a water or juice and snack from Camp Store before going to the pool or the lake with our unit. After drying off it was time for dinner so we filed back into the Dining Hall for taco night! After enjoying churros we went back to our cabins for showers and devotion because tonight is Movie Night! We watched Lilo and Stitch tonight before heading to bed to get a good night’s sleep for tomorrow.
Our week really flew by and we can’t believe Thursday is already here! Cabin 17 preformed chapel this morning with a skit about responsibility. Then we got to enjoy bagels with cream cheese, sausage, and eggs for breakfast. Today’s cabin clean up winners were 27, 11, and 12 and everyone is still competing to be this weeks cleanest cabin in hopes of winning Kona Ice tomorrow! We had another awesome day of activities doing things like Tie Dye in Arts and Crafts or going on the Canoe Trip. Lunch consisted of chicken nuggets, corn, rolls, pears, and our perfectly baked sugar cookies. Afterwards everyone rested a little in order to have energy for the rest of the fun filled day. We all went to Shoulda Woulda Coulda and then had a snack from Camp Store. After, everyone was ready for Cabin Time or Swim Time. At the lake everyone got to play on the attractions and at the pool everyone was relaxing and cooling off. At Cabin Time everyone had the opportunity to grow closer through team building exercises or just fun activities. Next it was time for dinner where we had baked potatoes with tons of toppings and ice cream for dessert! Tonight’s evening program was our dance, which is one of the highlights of every week! Campers were so excited to show off their moves and hangout with friends. To end the day each cabin had a devotion and then some flashlight time before bed. It has been an amazing week and we’re excited for another great day tomorrow!
Today was our last day of camp for the week and for the whole summer! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. We started the morning off the same as everyday with a chapel skit from Cabin 14 about Faith in yourself and those around you. Our breakfast was fluffy biscuits, eggs, sausage, and cheese. Then we were off to our final day of activities where campers were able to finish their ranks and challenge them self to things such as Big Swing at Alpine. After activities we had Cabin Time and Swim Time. At Cabin Time everyone practiced skit in order to prepare tonight’s closing campfire. At the lake everyone got one more chance to swim and try out all the attractions! Everyone was hungry for lunch after our busy morning and we filled our bellies with corn dogs, mac n cheese triangles, peaches, and our famous Kanata chocolate chip cookies. At lunch we also announced the Cabin Clean Up Winners for the day, week, and summer. On the boys side, Cabin 11 won Kona Ice and Cabin Clean Up for the day, week, and whole summer! On the girls side Cabin 27 won for the day and week meaning they also got some Kona Ice. Cabin 1 was our winner for the whole summer! Next we had our Rest Period, Shoulda Woulda Coulda, and Camp Store. Afterwards, it was time for another Swim Time or Cabin Time. For dinner we enjoyed lasagna, garlic bread, brussel sprouts, and brownies for dessert. Then, the dining hall erupted for our final cheer off. After dinner we had our last Closing Campfire where all of the units performed skit and the butterflies won! In addition, everyone said goodbye to Shane because it is his final summer as director here at Camp Kanata. It has been an amazing week, and an amazing summer, filled with memories to last a lifetime. Until next time…
