Jungle Week: June 17 - 23

Introduction

Vista! Check here for daily updates about what's happening at Camp Kanata! Posts for each day will be up by 11pm.

Opening day:

Another opening day is in the books at Camp Kanata and it was a great one! Campers took the swim assessment, sang some songs and bonded with their cabin mates. We had spaghetti and meatballs for dinner with garlic bread on the side and ice cream for dessert. After everyone had filled their bellies, we had our first cheer off of the week! Tonight’s evening program was the Opening Campfire. The campers enjoyed watching counselor skits and hearing about the ins and outs of camp. We cannot wait to get Jungle Week going!

Monday:

Monday’s are always awesome here at Camp Kanata! We started the morning at chapel by learning about Caring, which is our trait of the day. The administrative staff put on a skit to help teach everyone the importance of being kind and helpful to others. Breakfast consisted of warm, flaky biscuits along with eggs and sausage. After breakfast we had cabin clean up where the cabins receive a cleanliness score. Our cabin clean-up winners for the day were 27 on the girl’s side and a tie between 11 and 13 on the boy’s side. Then it was time for campers to head to their activities such as Arts and Crafts, Archery or Canoeing. For lunch we ate pizza and fruit with our famous chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Once our bellies were full we headed to an extra-long Rest Period. Then we went to Camp Store, or snack time, to refuel before heading to General Swim. We enjoyed an extended swim time in the lake and pool to keep us extra cool. For dinner we had Barbeque sandwiches, corn, beans and gooey chocolate chip brownies. After dinner each night we have an evening program and tonight we had a camp wide “Counselor Hunt” which is like hide-and-seek. Before bed every cabin has a devotion to teach YMCA character traits and to bring the cabin closer together. It was a great first full day of camp and we are so pumped for another fun day tomorrow!

Tuesday:

Today was another fantastic day at Camp Kanata! We woke up and started the morning with chapel where we learned about honesty with a skit from Cabin One. We ate delicious cinnamon rolls with eggs and bacon for breakfast. Then everyone participated in cabin clean up with the winners being Cabin 2 on the girl’s side and Cabin 10 on the boy’s. For lunch we chowed down on some chicken alfredo pasta and breadsticks on the side! After lunch everyone enjoyed some extra Rest Period. Next up we had a special activity that kept us cool and having tons of fun. We had fire trucks visit Camp that sprayed everyone with water while we blasted music! This was truly a treat. After this was Cabin Time or General Swim where cabins hung out doing activities or swimming in the lake/pool. This evening was Unit Night and we roasted hotdogs and marshmallows to perfection over a fire with everyone our unit. All the units had a special activity planned after their dinner over-the-fire and an awesome devotion to finish up the evening. Overall, we had a great day and can’t believe how fast the week is flying by!

Wednesday:

There is never a hump-day slump at Camp Kanata and today was no exception! We started off the day with cabin 11 leading chapel highlighting today’s character trait of the day: respect. We were treated to French toast and sausage links for breakfast. The campers stayed cool in their activities today by finding ways to play in the shade or even in the pool or lake. We had chicken sandwiches and waffle fries for lunch with MnM cookies for dessert. Cabin 18 on the girl’s side and cabin 13 on the guy’s side won cabin cleanup today, one step closer to Kona Ice! Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda was on today for the first time this week so campers got to enjoy whatever activity they wanted before we went cabin time. This is a time where kids bond with their cabin mates and do activities with each other. Lasagna and garlic bread was on the menu tonight and dessert was some light and spongey strawberry-shortcake. Tonight’s evening program was the Kanata Zoo. Each cabin picked a counselor to dress up into a real or made up animal who then presented themselves to the whole camp at the amphitheater. Tonight was full of laughs and we expect nothing less from tomorrow.

Thursday:

We can’t believe another day has come and gone. We had a great start to our day at chapel with Cabin 11 leading a skit about responsibility. For breakfast we had delicious biscuits along with bacon, eggs, and cheese. Currently, the block stacking score of the summer has the girls in the lead with 7 points and the boys with 3. Our cabin clean up winners for the day were Cabin 11 on the boys side and Cabin 1 for the girls! Next, everyone headed to another great day of activities. Arts and Crafts tie-died today and the Canoe trip class went on their adventure in the Neuse River! We enjoyed cold cut sandwiches for lunch with our gooey sugar cookies for dessert. Everyone got a chance to swim in either the pool or lake today, and some people got to splash around in both! Dinner was chicken nuggets, green beans, mashed potatoes and banana pudding! Tonight’s evening program was the long-awaited Dance where everyone got dressed up and ready to show off their moves. It was another awesome day at Camp and we’re sad to see that it’s almost come to an end. But, we’re so excited for Friday!

Friday:

Jungle Week’s closing campfire is over and we cannot believe it! The Butterfly unit came out victorious in this week’s unit skit contest, but it did not come easily. The whole day was packed with fun, though, starting with morning chapel led by Cabin 3. They reminded us that the first step to anything is having Faith in God and in yourself. After “waking up Gertrude” we got to go to a breakfast of sausage links, eggs and grits. The final day of activities consisted of some activities challenging ad-staff, Alpine doing the big swing, and Arts and Crafts making survival bracelets. We had delicious cheeseburgers for lunch with fries and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Our cabin clean up winners today were cabin 11 and 13 for the boys and cabin 4 for the girls. This week’s cabin clean up winners earned themselves some Kona Ice and they were cabin 11 and 13 for the boys and cabin 2 for the girls! Everyone enjoyed some Rest Period before heading to Shoulda Woulda Coulda and then Camp Store. For dinner we had taco night, which is always a hit, and for dessert we had out sweet, cinnamon covered churros! All of the cabins preformed skit at our closing campfire and everyone had a chance to say goodbye to new friends at the end. It's been an amazing week at Camp Kanata, until next time...
