Opening day:

At two o’clock today we rang the bell meaning it was time for another opening day! All of our counselors were so excited to meet their new campers and start another great week of camp. Everyone moved into their cabins, said goodbye to their families and got started with our day of activities. Campers took the swim assessment, signed up for activities and received a camp tour. For dinner we enjoyed spaghetti and meatballs along with ice cream for dessert. After dinner we had our boys v girls cheer-off that was filled with camp spirit. Next, it was time for opening campfire where we laughed at silly skits and learned a little bit about camp. To end our day every cabin had devotion. This is a time to reflect, learn about YMCA character traits and grow closer with our cabinmates. We had an awesome start to our week and are looking forward to our first full day tomorrow!

Stars and Stripes Week got off to a great start today! We began the day with chapel from the Ad Staff this morning. They talked about how important it is to be caring to everyone no-matter what their background is. After waking up Gertrude we went to the dining hall for eggs, bacon, and toast. After breakfast we spent some extra time cleaning up our cabins to make sure we start the week off right before heading to activities. Our cabin clean up winners for the day were cabins 4 and 14! At activities everyone made new friends and tried new things such as Archery, Canoeing or the Climbing Wall. At lunch we had chicken nuggets, fries and peaches with our famous Kanata chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Next was rest period where we relaxed in order to keep our energy up the rest of the day. We went to Shoulda Woulda Coulda where everyone got to pick any activity to try and then we went to Camp Store for a snack! After it was time to hangout with our cabins or go swimming in the lake or pool. For dinner we enjoyed potatoes with cheese, meat, sour cream and broccoli along with delicious oreo chocolate pudding for dessert. After dinner we have an evening program every night and tonight we played a camp wide game of capture the flag. Every cabin ended the day with devotion and a little flashlight time before everyone went to sleep. We know tomorrow will be just as fantastic!

We woke up this morning at 7:15 to get our fun-filled day started! Our first part of the day is always chapel where cabin 9 performed a skit about honesty. We enjoyed chicken biscuits and eggs for breakfast. At breakfast every morning we have a block stacking competition and the boys won for the day, but the girls are still in the lead for the summer. Next was cabin clean up with today’s winners being Cabin 11 and 15 on the boy’s side and Cabin 16 for the girls. After cabin clean up it was time for activities where everyone continued to practice new skills and hangout with new friends. Lunch was pizza, fruit, and cookies for dessert! After our bellies were full from lunch we went to Rest Period to take a nap. We woke up ready for more fun and headed to Shoulda Woulda Coulda and then Camp Store. Everyone also had the chance to swim in the lake/pool or have Cabin Time. Dinner was awesome because Tuesday’s are Unit Night where we get to roast hot dogs and s’mores. After dinner each Unit had their own evening program and some units combined together to double the fun. Some examples include the Spartans and Daisies going to the pool to splash around! Also, the Lower Lakers played a game of “spoons”, which is similar to a game of tag. After all of the s’mores were eaten and everyone was tired from evening programs the Units finished the day with a devotion. We’re so pumped for another exciting day tomorrow!

It was another amazing day at Camp Kanata! This morning Cabin 6 performed a great chapel skit about respect. Our breakfast this morning was truly a treat because it was scones, which is a fan favorite! After breakfast we had cabin clean up and our winners of the day were Cabin 11 and 15 for the boys and Cabin 3 for girls! Everyone is looking forward to seeing the weekly winner who will get Kona Ice on Friday! The rest of our morning included activities, Cabin Time, and Swimming in the lake/pool. For lunch we had burgers, fries, and gooey M&M cookies. After we headed straight to Rest Period, Shoulda Woulda Coulda, and Camp Store. Then we had another opportunity to have Cabin Time or go for a swim. Dinner was crispy fried chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, and banana pudding for dessert. Everyone had a blast at tonight's evening program, which was a talent show! Individuals and groups got to preform songs, dances, skits, and everything in between. After our talent show the night was not over yet because it was time for a firework show! Then it was time to end the day with devotion and head to bed. We can’t believe tomorrow is already Thursday but we’re so excited for tomorrow night’s dance.

Another Thursday has ended at Camp Kanata, but we sure know how to spend them! We started the day together in the amphitheater with Cabin 2 teaching camp about responsibility. They sent us to breakfast and we dug into some delicious bacon and egg biscuits. A lot of the activities at camp allow the campers to try to rank in them by completing challenges associated with that activity, so a lot of kids were working hard to complete their challenges. Everyone worked up an appetite so we got back into the dining hall for a chicken sandwich filled lunch. We enjoyed sugar cookies before heading back to the cabins for rest period. After rest period we had Shoulda Woulda Coulda and Camp Store before General Swim. Everyone at camp gets to swim in the pool or lake every day and today was extra fun because of the warmer weather. We had lasagna and garlic bread for dinner before eating some amazing brownies. Dinner seemed to go slowly because everyone was so excited to get to the dance! Everyone danced to their heart's content before setting out for their cabin devotion. It was a great day at Kanata and we have high hopes for tomorrow!

Our last day of Stars and Stripes week was a great one! It started out with Cabin 12 telling us how important it is to believe in yourself and others. After waking up Gertrude we went to the dining hall for breakfast. We had sausage, eggs, grits and toast before going back to our cabins for cleanup. It was the last day to make our cabins look great for inspections and after everyone set out for activities. We had a blast during our last day of activities where some people challenged Ad Staff to a friendly competition in their respective games. We all worked up an appetite after activities and cabin time so we went back to the dining hall for lunch. We ate Mac n’ Cheese triangles and corndogs with chocolate chip cookies for dessert before learning that Cabins 11 and 17 won the daily cabin cleanup competition with 15 and 4 winning the week average. We got a little bit of liquid sunshine after rest period but that did not stop us from having a great time in our cabins. We dug into some tacos with all the fixin’s for dinner with awesome churros for dessert. Closing Campfire was amazing for everyone but especially for Lower Lake because they won the weekly skit competition. It was another fantastic week at Camp Kanata and until next time...
