Rory O'Brien

Associate Director of Overnight and Day Camping

How long have you worked at Camp? Were you a camper and/or counselor before?
I started working at camp as a Junior Counselor in 2006. However, I started coming to camp as a camper in 1996.  After 11 years as a camper/trainee, three years as a cabin counselor, and four years as a member of the Summer Administrative Staff, I joined the year-round director team in the fall of 2013.

Favorite Camp memory?
Every week at the closing campfire, when you get to see just how very special Kanata is to everyone who spends time here; whether it be their first week or their 15th summer.

Where were you born?
I was born in Keene, New Hampshire, but moved down to Cary, North Carolina when I was a little more than a year old.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an NFL General Manager for the longest time until I realized that I could make a career out of Camp. Now I get to play Dodgeball for a living.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in life?
Always strive to find enjoyment in whatever you’re doing.

What’s your favorite thing/hobby and why?
I am a really big sports fan, and my favorite teams are the Carolina Panthers and the UNC Tar Heels basketball team. My favorite books are the Harry Potter Series. And most importantly my favorite Camp meals are scones for breakfast, pizza or chicken sandwiches for lunch and lasagna for dinner.
